Minutes from August 21, 2008 meeting
Meeting was called to order at 6:09 p.m. in the Marlin Library
Present: Tina Brickert, Stephanie Jachim, Julie Ramey, Heidi Darling, Chris Finley, Ann
Buehler, Lisa Hutchcraft, and Christy Hegarty
Secretary’s report from the May 19 meeting of the PTO was given by 2007 Secretary
Stephanie Jachim.
Treasurer Heidi Darling presented the budget and highlighted changes, including:
• Income line items all show as $1
• Expenses are divided into two categories, fixed and not fixed
• All expenses are from the last school year
• There is currently enough money only to cover the fixed expenses
• Fundraising goal for 2008-09 is $1,775 plus $7,000 to spend in 2009-10
• Heidi will break out the year-end party lines to show Education Day, School
Dance, and Graduation
• Barb Ooley did not cash a reimbursement check from the PTO for $122; she
donated the money back to the Bradford Woods scholarship/library lines
Heidi handed out the letter that will be given to parents at the spring Open House to
explain the budget and introduce the PTO. Heidi asked the other members to review the
letter and send suggestions to her via e-mail.
The budget was approved by the members present and will be passed out to and voted on
by parents on August 28 at the fall Open House.
The group agreed to write and produce a monthly PTO newsletter reporting the money
collected from box tops. The newsletter will also include explanations of what the PTO
does and is doing.
Stephanie handed out copies of the bylaws. PTO members can only serve two
consecutive years as an officer.
Principal’s Report – Mr. Finley
• 2008-09 marks Mr. Finley’s fourth year at Marlin
• The beginning of school is always stressful, but the numbers are good
• There are 35 6th graders, 29 5th graders, 26 4th graders and 42 2nd graders
• Mr. Finley complimented the teachers’ classroom management skills
• Mrs. Hammersley has returned to teach 5th and 6th grade and is a good teacher to
have back
• Mrs. Graft is well
• Marlin also has a new music teacher, Chris Bultman
Mr. Finley thanked the PTO for all the work they did on the spring 2008 field day,
carnival and 6th grade dance.
The group discussed the success of the Carnival. The food wagon outside did well and
wants to set up again at the 2009 Carnival. All the cotton candy was sold.

New Business
• Schedule regular PTO meetings the second Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m.
The next meeting is September 9.
• Jill Hammersley and Megan Somers-Glen are the teacher representatives to the
PTO.
• PTO members filled out contact information for the school directory.
• Stephanie Jachim reported that kindergarten packets with PTO information went
out, and extra packets were left with teachers. Each kindergarten family has a
Kroger card.
• The PTO volunteer sign up form was re-done. The form indicates that Room
Moms may be requested directly by teachers.
• Marlin Skate Night is the first Tuesday of the month from 6:30 – 8:30 at Western
Skateland. Admission is $4 plus skate rental.
• The PTO collects Campbell’s Soup Labels, Box Tops for Education, and Tyson
labels. Lists of what you can find labels on will go out in the student’s Friday
folders the week of August 25.
• Lisa Hutchcraft will make posters for the Open House showing what items labels
can be found on. Campbell’s points can be used through their catalogs.
• Mr. Finley said the school will do the Paragon fundraiser again. $6,000 was raised
in 2007-08. Deadline is September.
• The Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 28. Stephanie has arranged
for the grill. Lisa will call about getting watermelon and fruit donated.
• The Open House budget is $200.
• PTO members will explore the possibility of getting items donated. Have Barb
Musgrave call her son, Stephanie price items at Sam’s Club, ask Andrea about
restaurant contacts
• Ask parents to bring salads, sides, desserts, chips, etc.
• Julie Ramey will provide two big igloo coolers for drinks, and will provide drink
mixes.
• Christy Hegarty, Stephanie, and Mr. Finley will bring coolers.
o Open House itinerary: introduce PTO members and let parents know they
need to vote on the budget
o Subscribe to Family Fun magazine to get $5 back for school for each $10
subscription
• Mr. Finley has everything set up for T-shirts/spirit wear and will bring
information to the September PTO meeting.
• The group discussed additional fundraisers, including Marsh Fresh Ideas for
Education. Heidi will research getting Marlin signed up to benefit from Fresh Idea
cards.
• The group will have a look at the state of things in January to see if an additional
fundraiser is warranted.
PTO Projects
• Lisa agreed to coordinate Education Day
• Christy will coordinate Grandparent’s Day, November 11
o 9:15 Coffee & bagels – Mr. Finley will get from Panera
o 9:45 Classroom visits
o 10:30 Convocation
o 11:25 Lunch – eat in classrooms
• Heidi will coordinate Skate Nights
• Stephanie will coordinate Teacher Wish Lists – Tina will help
• Ann Buehler will coordinate Art to Remember. Will coordinate with Mr.
Stockwell on deadlines and about telling kids what to draw. Tina will get the Art
to Remember information box to Ann.
